Jenefer (The Sea Claimed Her)
Jenefer (The Sea Claimed Her)
I was inspired to create this artwork from a plaque on a gate in Bosham, West Sussex (see pic!) that a father placed there for his daughter who was drowned at sea. It just stayed with me. The colors and materials reflect the Chichester Harbour and the English seaside.
The base is an old cupboard door - I love reusing odd things I come across, both for the conservation aspect & for the interest they add to art. On top of that is painted cardboard with a watercolor stitched on to it. There are shells, sand, flotsam & jetsam I collected near fishermen boats, whelk egg cases, seaweed, stones and gold leaf flakes imbedded in resin with mica. Be sure to scroll to the bottom of the page to see videos with closeups. It’s definitely a mixed media piece! And it’s one of my favorites. It took over two years for me to finish it; I had to wait to hear what Jenefer was telling me.

In the video I talk a bit about the process and origin of Jenefer; she wasn’t quite completed yet.
This video shows the finished piece in close up.
